Why would my boss just fix my mistake and not tell me?

I misunderstood and made a mistake, he fixed it while I was away and had a chat with me when I came back asking if I understood the area of work, I said yes (presuming I did) and then nothing more was said.

Why didn't he just tell me that I'd made a mistake?

Probably so you wouldn’t feel bad. I’m somewhat of a manager in my department at work, and when someone makes a mistake, I do the same thing and just ask them if they understand this or that with sales. I find saying they made the mistake can throw them off or have them feel embarrassed, and that’s not my intention.
