Did dogs actually evolve from the grey wolf?

I am skeptical about the information being spread that dogs exclusively evolved from the grey wolf. In my opinion, it’s much more likely that domestic dogs, wolfs and jackals, and even coyotes all evolved from one ancestor,

but saying that dogs directly evolved from the grey wolf seems a bit fraudulent to me. It’s more likely that both dogs and wolves evolved from one ancient ancestor, which makes them related but not quite what they make it sound like.

For sure, some domestic breeds are descended from wolves.

But I agree that there must have been other wild k-9 species in various parts of the world and that they evolved from a common ancestor. Like cats, there must have been various species to fill different niches.

So, when humans began domesticating dogs, they didn't only breed wolves. Jackals and foxes are K-9s and there may have been other species or subspecies.
