How much time might I need to spend studying outside of school to get straight As?

Different courses require different amounts of effort and different people have different sets of skills/ability. For example, I had some computer science courses that I never opened the book for, never watched a lecture, each of the 5 or so projects took me less than an hour to code and submit, and the first day I went to class was for the final exam and I managed to get an A.

In contrast, a biochemistry laboratory I took I had to show up for lab twice a week to carry out experiments for 3 hours each day. I had to read for about an hour prior to attending lab and prep my laboratory notebook prior to. Then after I finished my experiments for the week I had to run pages of calculations and write a ridiculously long reports every week. Generally the laboratory report and all calculations were roughly 30-50 pages and took me a solid day of writing just for a laboratory.

Well i am talking about highschool lol. I realized my question is stupid.

In block scheduling most high school courses cover about 2 chapters a week in a text book. An average science text book at high school level for example is about 10 to 15 pages long. People generally read about 20 pages per hour. So you’re looking at 30-45 minutes twice a week of reading per course. Then you might have some sort of take home worksheet or a set of questions in the book to answer to reinforce a concept. Students that do well tend to active note take while they read as well. So maybe 2 study sessions per week at roughly an hour a pop for each course. Block is usually alternating days of 3 courses one of which is typically some sort of elective that requires less if any study. So two hours every afternoon would probably keep most kids on line for success. A little more every now and then to review for quizzes/unit tests or to do special projects/papers. If you read before class, you will tend to excel at the warm ups, digest the lectures more easily, and have an easy time at what ever activity you are assigned after the lecture. If you get get home by 2:30-3 PM and work until dinner time at 5-6 PM in a typical household you will probably get everything done. You just have to do it every day and not skip days it to play video games, text your friends, watch youtube, or go to keg parties...

I played university soccer (3 hour practices, travel, national tournament, etc), Frat VP, and kept 3.87 with double major and a minor. I went to school year around and had 2 class my last semester which I don’t remember 😎

3.87 GPA and I had every hour blocked off from 4:30am to 10:30pm. Like detailed: 4:30am-6:15am Study, 6:15-7:15 breakfast, 7:15-8:15 pre class review. Classes and Practices filled in Study blocks in evening…etc

The details were a daily thing and planned before bed for next day.

Monopoly since 10 years old, Biology, Accounting, Psychology minor. Considered NeuroPsych and originally thinking Psychiatrist. Then, I realized the money was in Accounting, Concrete Assets, and Land just like Monopoly game 😎
