Have you found your “calling”?

Too many people are out here chasing money rather than job satisfaction. There’s an old saying about finding your calling. “Find that thing that you love to do and then find a way to make money doing it.” Then there’s the classic, “If you love what you do, you’ll never work a day in your life.”.
I must admit, like most men, i kind of chased the money and job security. Don’t get me wrong. I like my job and i’m really good at it. And i love being good at my job! But some days are loathsome. Maybe that last quote is just whimsical hyperbole. So i’m wondering if anyone here has found their calling. Do you love what you do? Would you do it for free?

Sort of. I'm going to quote you, because it's a perfect piece of the answer: "I like my job and I'm really good at it. And i love being good at my job!"

But, yeah, like you I have some days that are loathsome.

For now, though, I'm doing what I'm supposed to be doing and, summing it up in fewest words, I'm helping my team and my bosses do what they do.

My real calling? To be a writer. I'm working my way towards that, one brutally difficult word at a time.

I will be going back to work tomorrow after enjoying my weekend. I will not be happy about it.


What jobs would I enjoy going back to work on Monday for? Rock star, pro ball player, emperor, maybe a circus clown.


I’ve heard it said “take a job you love and you’ll never work another day in the rest of your life.” Copy. So just quit your job and go be a carnival worker.


Reality is, no one wants to go back to work on Monday, but chasing the money will sure make the lifestyle you can afford a lot better. I’m at work 40 hours a week and not at work the rest of the time. Would rather have a more enjoyable lifestyle than and enjoyable job as enjoyable jobs don’t pay much.

I found my calling (I can't talk about what it was) while working a job I hated. Then my new mindset (related to discovering my life purpose) meant that my entire perspective of life changed to one of gratitude... then I started to love my job...

Well I certainly like what I do and can’t really think of anything other solid career I’d rather do. But the fact I could be making 180k/yr in a couple years doesn’t hurt either

Well every job contain tasks you don't like, so however you split it you will be working even if you do what you want.

I already found my calling. I'm a licensed electrician and I have my own business doing it. I love having customers tell me that I made their vision a reality or I fixed something other electricians couldn't fix

GREAT Q! I ask myself this Q almost daily. And tbh, I have chased money too much with poor results. Slowly my jobs have gotten better, but I'm STILL for that thing I LOVE doing! Unless it's answering G@G Qs!🙂🙃😏

I'm not getting paid to be a beachgoer and swimmer. Hence i have a job in order to finance me going to the beach and swim. Or looking good.

If most people get paid doing what they love to do ( in terms of it being their hobby), then the alcoholics would be rich and dead at a very young age.

I’m an alcoholic. I know dozens of other alcoholics and addicts. Only those in denial would suggest they have found joy.

I had a love affair with airplanes ever since I first saw one and knew what it was. I knew then they would be a part of my life. I didn’t know in what capacity of course. As I got into my teens it became clear I wasn’t college material or HS material either but I was mechanically gifted so it was just natural to be an aircraft mechanic. I did my dream job for my dream company without having a GED. To me it was like getting to go play on a huge piece of playground equipment and yes I would’ve done it for free

I work with a guy who might be mistaken for a car geek because he has so many vehicles. But i’m certain his passion is for driving. He clearly loves driving all kinds of vehicles, and he is an equipment operator by trade. I envy him, and you!
