I'm in a situation now where my previous boss and friend was recently fired due to various incidents that could be sumerised as being unable to handle the pressure. He's recieved tons of critique and while defending him I couldn't help but point out a few flaws myself.
Now his position is open and the higherups are seriously considering me for his job. I can't say it's not what I want but I feel guilty because it feels like I snatched the job from him.
Business is business. I had a sim situation happen and the best advice i was told was to keep personal friendship out of it. Almost always, decisions in business are fair and made due to merit (of course there are exceptions but generally the case in a good workplace) .
so…dont feel guilty for being talented!
If you are more qualified and were not the reason that he lost his position. That is the way it should be. The more qualified person should have the right to fill the position.

No but the closest I came to a situation like that was when the manager I worked under did some unethical things (in the HR sense) that really screwed me over with my job. My dilemma was that if I called him out on it and turned in his actions to the company, he would have got fired. But I was the only one there who could replace him and I didn't want his job. So I let it be and eventually got another job. The guy they hired to replace me ran into the same problems with him only worse.
Have you done anything for him being more likely to quit?
If the answer is "no", you didn't snatch the job.
