Do you ever feel like you've wasted your life thus far?

I saw on social media that some kid I used to work with just got his first house with his girlfriend. He's almost 10 years younger than me. Here I am single, renting and nowhere near being able to mortgage anything. Clearly I fucked up somewhere.

It is the classic "delayed gratification" problem. I got lucky and went to college because I was bored and the army would pay for it. But the army had paid for a Nintendo or computer for gaming, instead, i might still be living in my grandparents basement because I developed a sense of delayed gratification late. That said I also went to college late (after the army). There is no reason you can't, if you wanted to take academics seriously. Obviously if you just go to party with teenage girls that's not going to work out unless you're some kind of genius. Need to bear the instantaneous pain of struggling to understanding something, over and over, to get the higher gratification, delayed, in the form of a higher salary. There's no magic to it. It's just work.

I have got all the big boxes checked. I got married to someone really special. We had a new house built. We had 3 kids and saw them all graduate from college. I graduated college later in life but still I did it. I even got a Masters degree. I have a good career and look forward to retirement soon I have had a busy life and never spent much time having fun. I guess that is something I regret.

I feel like I had the potential to learn more which would bring more meaning to my life. Unfortunately I could never afford to go to college.
The only part where my life where I didn't feel like I wasted it was when I was raising my son. Those were the best days of my life and it all went so fast! I miss the little boy he used to be. I miss the hugs and making him giggle. He had the cutest laugh.
We were quite a team together 😊.

Not at all. Everyone lives life at their own pace. It’s not a race! This is why social media is generally bad for you - people share their life and you start comparing and feeling bad about yourself. My suggestion is to get off Facebook and remember that what people post on there is only showing them at their best moments.

Sometimes…cause it Covid and stuff. I didn’t picture myself being where I am now at 25. I wish I didn’t waste my time because I didn’t have enough confidence to change jobs, leave my toxic friends and make new ones etc.


I also always pictured myself being married with kids at 25. Lol. But that’s out of my control and I’m happy that I’m content and independent.

The sooner you accept that instead of trying to convince yourself it's ok, the sooner you can start taking the steps necessary to get yourself back on track.
