Yes, both these things. The student was not staying at my home, but I volunteered to introduce her to campus life as her contact person. The student exchange team was not best pleased that I wanted to look after a female student, but they needed volunteers.
It worked out well, and it was not as creepy as you may have feared from how my story started. The student had a boyfriend in the navy and she was not even my type. Still, she made friends easily and we went to parties together. Soon I found my girlfriend among one of her friends.
Family friends hosted a girl from Italy along time ago.
She thought we should be able to drive around Canada within the same day so she could see the other parts of the country like British Columbia and Alberta.
I had to show her how Italy barely covered southern and central Ontario for her to understand how large a landmass it is.

My family has hosted several in the past, mostly girls. One from China, one from Poland, two from South Korea, and seemingly half a dozen or so from Ukraine.

I don't remember which organizations. But the only one that truly didn't work out was the Polish girl.
