It depends on what you want to do specifically, since 3D modelers often earn money via commissions and not being in an an actual studio. The same goes for animators, VFX/SFX artists, and so forth. Programmers who make games often use it as a hobby while working something like cyber security as their main job for income.
If you want to try to make a game, then it will be a very punishing career and based on luck. It will take a lot of years of failing and learning from your mistakes, which can make you quit. There are a lot of positives to being a game dev, but I am focusing on the negatives, so you get an idea of it.
Also, you should treat this as a hobby due to how inconsistent the pay can be. That still applies for developers who have worked in major studios. It is very similar to the film industry.
