Have you ever taken a few years off from working and discovered how overated work is and then not really want to go back?

Life events forced me out of the work place a few years ago. Up till that point I'd always aimed to retire at 60. It never even occurred to me to retire sooner. But now seeing how little I miss it I'm really considering making it permanent.

Yes. And for the foreseeable future I'm good. But life doesn't come with guarantees. And the whole point of retiring is to stay retired. I wouldn't want to find myself short later on and have to go back to work past 60.

I collected unemployment during covid. I was out of work for 18 months. If I could have kept the checks going I would have never gone back to work

Yeah. Healthcare is probably the sticking point for me. It's not the bills I see it's the ones I don't see. I can afford it now. But I don't know about 5, 10 or 20 years from now.

For having 4 walls and a warm roof, that isn't a forsaken commie block and having edibles it falls under my own responsibility to afford these provisions. I don't believe i will ever retire.

@Unit1 Okay- I never made a lot of money until I was 50 but I had a retirement account when I got married at 24. I always contributed to it and my wife had one as well. The investments had their ups and downs over the years but it has a good amount of money in it. Thr trick is to start young and contribute to it every year.

I really do believe you do better not looking for " the next big thing " and just being consistent , then you can ride the ups and downs.. ETF s are a great way to go.
Matter of fact I just added another JEGA ( on ASX ) Why? Because its a complex long / short options fund , that pays monthly , and those guys really know what they are doing in this space , and I'm happy to admit , thats not my bag , but I'm very happy with it.
