either can be but I like to see they can last a while and commit. jumping around, I lose interest. Want me to put all that time in to hiring, training... hoping you fit in... and have you leave. No thanks. I had some good hires and a few bad ones.

Have a little bit of both as an employer I would look at what steps people have taken to develop themselves and taking unpaid work show you are dedicated to self development.

But if you are looking to find a job to build a career you want to be tailoring your CV to that job and job description it makes it more personal.

The more relevant it is for what you're applying to, the better.

Volunteer work is better than a huge gap of nothing.

I'd say paid work but if the volunteering is relevant it doesn't matter

  • Both volunteering and paid work hold value on a resume, but their importance depends on your goals and the job you are targeting. Volunteering can highlight your values, initiative, and skills like teamwork and leadership. Paid work demonstrates reliability, industry-specific experience, and a track record in a professional setting. Consider your career goals and which experience aligns better with the job you're applying for. Each has its place in showcasing your skills and dedication.

Giving of yourself (volunteering) says a lot about your character and might do better at interview where you can explain your duties and such. Rather than listing it in a resume where it just gets read over with other information.

either... if it is an actual reference to the work you're applying for

Both are important - especially if it shows a steady stream of activity and accomplishments relative to what you are applying for.

Working because volunteerism is seen as less committed

If you can't find a job, then consider doing volunteer work, and make sure its on your resume.

Depends on the job description and quality of experience whether paid or unpaid.
