In this situation , is it best to go out on a works night our or not?

Started a new job 3 months ago and I have been invited out a few times. I didn't want to go but went anyway to try to fit in more.

But I was horrified by how they were really nasty and mean about other people in the office. Some of the women told elaborate stories about colleagues , which I don't know if they're true or not. It was a character assassination really. They mocked and ridiculed people in the office for their appearance.

This is not the sort of association I want to be involved in. It's so toxic. I've been invited out again, but don't know if I should go just to fit in there , or decline and make an excuse. What's the best thing to do?

Since your work colleagues seem so toxic and nasty, not going will put you on their list of people to target next. Who knows if you are not already being the victim of such defamatory talks?

On the other hand, if you go and those that are being talked about find out that you joined them in talking negatively about them, they will also assume that you belong in that group of people and this may put you on the off-side and those colleagues will possibly not want to talk with you at work.

This is a tricky situation but in your situation, I would simply not go and rather have a good conscience about myself rather than to be suspected of being a fake person.

I wouldn’t go again. All it took me was one night out like that to completely exclude myself from those people. They’re not the sort of company you wanna keep.

Try and steer clear of the toxicity. But as someone who works in an office, it has a way of seaping into you.

There is always going to be some natural bitchiness and venting. Working with so many personalities in an enclosed space, for 8 hours a day. Try not to get sucked into the worst of it.

But yeah, you'll have to see how things go. Personally, I'm trying to get out of that environment. Keep your options open I guess.
