I don’t know why I didn’t invest my money during these past couple great stock market years. I guess a fear of losing it. That fear of losing it made me lose a lot of profit… I hope we still have some years of growth in the stock market, but I’m really upset with myself that I’ve missed out from just having my head buried in the sand. I wouldn’t have been a gazillionaire, but I would be worth over $1 million if I invested the way I should’ve been investing in the past few years. It wouldn’t have taken anything brilliant. Simple index funds. I feel like an idiot.

The market doesn't have to go up to make money. You can actually make more when it goes down and you can make money quicker by shorting stocks since stocks rise slowly and fall quickly. You're basically selling the stock when it's high and buying it back later when it goes down. You can do it through any large brokerage and there isn't really a time limit on when you have to buy the stock back. The brokerage could technically force you at any time but that doesn't happen often. Bull markets make you rich but bear markets make you fortunes

The potential losses are unlimited if it goes in the other direction if you’re making tons of money doing that, then I guess have added it. But just being invested in the stock market is long-term profitable. I’m not going to be Buffett, but I can still be somewhat rich.

If you want to limit losses then learn option spreads and hedge your trades. I never risk more than 1.5% of my account on any position in the market. The best part of option spreads is that it doesn't matter if the market goes up or down or sideways, there are ways to profit on any movement.
