Due to having severe burnout in the past, starting a new job makes me extremely anxious to the point of panic attacks. Does this also happen to you? And if it does, what do you do that helps?
8 moIt's actually the opposite for me. At first I'm super excited, then becoming so tired as time goes by. 🥲
I always have this mantra that helped me and might also help you get started, "You'll never know, if you never try." 🫶 and who knows, you might enjoy the job eventually. :)

8 moNo, but I’ve only had one job and it didn’t really burn me out, so maybe that’s why
10 Reply
Not really. I've changed jobs and country 3 times now and though burn out is real, I take control and give only enough to keep the smouldering need for me alive

Yes, it does. Therefore my solution is just to stay in the same job, @thatshydork.

I understand how starting a new job can trigger anxiety, especially after experiencing burnout. Drawing from personal experience, practicing mindfulness and setting realistic expectations were key in managing anxiety. Taking time each morning to center myself helped a lot. Additionally, open communication with the new employer about possible triggers can create a supportive environment. Reaching out to a trusted mentor or therapist can also provide guidance and reassurance in navigating this transition. Remember, it's important to prioritize self-care and pace yourself.

8 moGod I'm sorry to hear that. I have no trouble changing job these days so maybe I'm weird that way, but I know myself in a way that somehow protect me from myself, lol. I don't know how to put it. I have delibertly changed from doing one thing to another that requires less thinking energy from me when it's been tough before going back in there. It helps. At one point or another I had to stop worrying what people might think or not. They were in the shit as much as I and in no position to judge. If you have good co workers around you it helps. Support each other.
With my ex I noticed he changed to the worse around the time there were changes going on in his life such as a new, demanding job. He wouldn't hear of it when I would try to ask him if it wasn't too much? I think my ex had something mentally going on, sleeping, if you so will, that was awoken by positive as well as negative stress. More vulnerable to it.
It takes time for you to heal. You should rest, take it step by step, follow doctors, psychiatrists advice.
A risk is if you keep pushing yourself and having people around you that push that you will have periods when you manage somehow but then it is fragile and this thing (burn out, anxiety panic attacks depression) will return. You need to take good care of yourself and get the help you need.
Either have it worked out so that you will have an easier time at your job depending on what your doctor say or if to move on to another be kind to yourself and chose something that is easier on you, and take it from there? If you do the right thing you will get rid of the panic attacks. Be kind to yourself. Get the help you need. Make the changes that need to happen to get you there. Be patient. It takes time. But it will all be worth it.
00 ReplyOh yea definitely cuz every workplace has different rules and policies and lax norms… it’s definitely normal to have panic attacks during your job especially when you just started working there. For me the thing that helps is asking myself if i am mentally able have a pause to self regulate. If that’s a yes i would do some deep diaphragmatic breathing, following by 5-4-3-2-1 grounding, which takes me a minute max and people don’t even notice. But if the answer is no (mentally unable to pause to self-regulate, or feeling like nothing works), i would just sit still and remind myself breathe slowly (as i would find myself not breathing at all/breathing super fast until point of nausea). Hope that helps!

8 moWhen I was younger and inexperienced, it was always scary to start a new job… so to an extent it’s normal. You fear the unknown, and yet you put a ton of pressure on yourself because ultimately you just want to do a good job.
However, as you get older and work longer, work more jobs, etc., you kind of start to see how everything works… There are a lot of tools and systems in place that help you achieve things, maybe quicker than you expected… you feel a lot more confident in yourself because you’ve had to adapt and overcome. And even in the times where you didn’t quite know what you were doing, you got through it and learned.
When you do this enough, you’re almost “training that muscle” and you start to fear the unknown less and less. When you need help also, don’t be afraid to ask. If you’re in a halfway decent work environment, people will be more than willing to help you. It’s a team effort.

5 moStarting New job can be challenging for some people till they become used to. Sometimes this happens with me as well. But I never had any panic attacks.
It takes some time to understand the job environment, colleagues etc. there.
10 ReplyWouldn't say panic attacks but anxious yes but also a sense of newness and challenges of something different for me.
After working in one field for 30 years starting something new and different is a bit anxious yet fun as well.
Life's short live it up! Take each day as new and treat it as an adventure. Good Luck!
00 ReplyWhy are you anxious? Are you afraid that you'll mess up or? If so, don't worry. Don't be afraid to ask for help when you need it. :)

I worked two very physically demanding jobs at the same time without a single day off for 3.5ish months that resulted in a severe panic attack and multiple minor ones. For reference, I was a canine handler at a mismanaged doggy daycare where I would be alone with 10+ dogs for one and the other I worked as a day camp counselor.

I don't think my post came across the way I meant it. I believe you're burned out. I meant, nobody age 22 should be working to burnout. You got a lot of years left. Plenty of time for that later. It's good that you take so much responsibility and all. But remember you're only 22. The weight of the world is not yours to bear.
8 moyou need to push through it.
