I know 2 people who studied in Australia but I have not. Because I figure the weather in Australia might be more thirst inducing then Canada, and I am concerned about air quality and traffic safety, as well as medical difficulties since medical treatment is paid for out of pocket there. And I hear about crime organizations and criminals and I have this stereotype in my head that crime might be a little higher there. I also anticipate higher cancer rates in Australia due to environmental triggers like toxins in the seawater etc...

I moved here in 2019, and the potential for work benefits blows away anything available in the USA (unless you are really lucky) where I was born and raised. The wages quadtupled when I moved here.

On Australia, here are some thoughts I penned for a friend a few eeks ago:

Australia traditionally has a larrikin spirit. People don't take themselves too seriously here. See the more than slightly inebriated Prime Minister of Australia on the occasion of Australia winning the 1983 America's Cup yachting competition in 1983 ... and yachting is not ever a particularly big thing here. Sports and beaches have always been a great societal glue. And we don't have a history of 'class' in Australia... that is separation of rich and poor. By Anglophile standards we have a decent social welfare safety net and an ethos of giving people a 'fair go'. Incomes are pretty good on average, the economy is fairly stable, violent crime rates are not high. We will never become a crazy in-group, out-group state like the US seems to have become because, frankly, not a lot of people care enough to hate other people. Politics is fought over the middle, not the extreme wings.

This has changed over the course of my life and will continue to do so. In the same way that we saw waves of immigration from the UK, Italy and Greece in the 1950s, from Vietnam and South East Asia in the 1970s and 1980s, and more recently India and to a lesser degree China, the country continues to reinvent itself. There are good and bad aspects to these changes. The number of high-wealth people has increased a lot in the past 25 years and there are, like all countries I guess, cracks that poor people fall through with crazily high rents, if you are a woman retiring without owning a property or holding investment income, etc. House prices are very high and young people struggle to see a path to ever buying, with social consequences such as low birth rates. Our three-tier Commonwealth-State-Local system of government shows signs of fraying at the edges sometimes, but we seem well placed to continue to bumble our way through.

On study, there are basically two types of international students: those that want to study; and those that want to migrate.

If you are a serious student, there is a handful of good quality international grade universities. We do not have anything like an Oxford or a Harvard, but they are serious research institutions. The list basically runs: University of Melbourne, University of New South Wales, University of Sydney, Australian National University... with a second tier running University of Queensland, Monash University and Macquarie University. They each have bright flashy websites whose main purpose is to recruit foreign students. All of the other universities are a hard pass, is my advice, other than in a few narrow specialties.

Then there are international students that really just want to migrate. It is pretty easy to get a visa to stay on for two or three years with work rights after completing an Australian degree. If you want to migrate permanently then holding Australian degree also gives you an advantage in your application. They tend to take second-rate degrees from second-rate universities in accounting, IT, business management... basically courses that you can pass with zero effort.

If you are in the latter camp, you should be aware that, given social sentiment here currently, it's possible or even probable that migration pathways for international students will be more limited in future years.
