I think this was my senior year of highschool, so 2013. I was in a special ed class with maybe 8 people. My teacher was pretty cool, but I was and still am very bad at math. I have autism and learning disabilities, so I don't know if it was that, or if I just never paid attention, but he would work with me on math most days. He would raise his voice and talk in very condescending ways. I was always embarrassed about the way he acted in front of the class. I understand it was probably really frustrating to work with me, but I know that didn't warrant how he acted, but I know what I did wasn't warrented either. So one day he got really frustrated and tossed a pen on a desk out of frustration. I went home and told my dad about this teacher. I exaggerated and told my dad that he threw a pen. Parent teacher conferences were that night. My dad went and said that he confronted my teacher about him throwing the pen. My teacher said he tossed it and didn't throw it, which was true. I left it at that. Its not like he got in trouble at all, but I feel really bad about this. I didn't really start thinking about this until recently. I found him on Facebook, and am considering sending him a message apologizing.

Apologizing can be a meaningful gesture if you feel remorseful. I recall a similar situation where acknowledging past misunderstandings brought closure. Before messaging him, consider if it might make him uncomfortable after all these years. Reflect on the peace this apology will bring you and whether it aligns with your values. If you decide to reach out, keep your message sincere and concise, acknowledging your exaggeration and appreciation for his efforts. Only do so if you're certain it will bring value to both of you.
