Strange, because you can also use it in the expression 'esto vale un huevo', which means it costs a lot of money, or, in a different context, that it's not easy to obtain.

Languages have a tendency to evolve on different paths when in isolation. I suppose that can be said for British English and American English, where you'd use difrferent words for the same thing, like lift and elevator. Spanish spoken in Middle and South America has different expressions and words. French in France is slightly different from the versions spoken in Belgium, Switzerland and Quebec, although they share most of the grammatical structures. I think this only makes languages richer.
