I have worked fora few different people in my career. I had a lot of respect for most of them. A few I had no respect for. I thought that they were empty suits that only looked out for themselves.

when I began to run my oen department I looed st what the bad managers did snd I did the opposite. I also looked after my people even if it ran against what my boss wanted.

I have always respected my bosses. Even when I waitressed and my boss would start yelling, "you dumb son of a *****! How can you be so F**king stupid"! I was terrified, thinking he was yelling at someone but a coworker told me, "don't worry about it, he's yelling at himself". How can you not respect that lol He was very intimidating but an absolute riot!

I’ve been in your shoes, both resenting “empty suits” and later becoming the person in charge.

Three thoughts from my own path:

1. You don’t have to respect the person to respect the role. Sometimes I separated “my boss as a human” from “the position I agreed to work under,” and that made it manageable.

2. Protecting your team is right, but risky. I’ve done it too. The key is doing it transparently and tying it to business results, not emotion.

3. Learn from every boss. Good ones show you what to emulate; bad ones clarify exactly who you refuse to become.

I respect him but he's done some things that I assume happened because he's really busy. I hope that turns out to be true.

But he's got a very similar sense of humor to me and we both fit this description of really good guy but sometimes an asshole. Very dry humor at someone else's expense. It took me a few days to even tell he was joking. I was like is this what everyone else feels like around me? 😂

Our management is okay but not great.

There's one who is great technically, everyone is reliant on him.

There are two that don't even have that going for them. They could be worse, but also could be a lot better. I'm always fairly bemused when they go off on sick for 4 months and yet it doesn't even seem to matter from the perspective of the organisation. All the work gets done and everything is fine. If I'm off on annual leave for a week that causes issues for the organisation.

There is a lot of poor management. Favouritism, double standards, nepotism, cronyism, different expectations for allegedly vulnerable staff or friends, and the group get punished with stricter rules when people should be dealt with individually if they are taking the piss. Communication to 'transgressors' is very poor. Some can't even compose an email without relying on AI.

Overall it's quite an unpleasant and stultifying environment.

No. She is a horrible person. I was new to the company and had made friends with other people in the other department.

It was our Christmas party and I was put into the team I don't know.

I asked a manager that I got along well with if I could go to their group instead and he said that was fine.

The next day my boss called me into a meeting room and called me malicious for going behind her back.

What a pshyco. So no, I don't have respect for her.

Your question made me think , I've had around 14., of those 14 , probably only absolute respect for 1 ( here talking direct bosses ) , however I've nearly always skipped the boss and dealt with higher owners / directors , higher up I found a lot more joy , and can't think of any of them that I didn't have respect for.

Some of these middle managers though are not supportive , not very intelligent in my experience anyhow , I felt when I was the boss that I was a lot more supportive , a lot more logical , and I'd put all on the line to support valued individuals..

Over the years I had some supervisors who were super cool and a couple who were dicks. All my direct managers were good people.
I became good friends with some of my supervisors and managers.

There was a VP for a while who was a complete ass hole.

The owner is probably the best I've ever worked for. The so called #2 however, is an absolute POS. Zero boundaries, a people pleaser, and absolutely horrible managerial skills. Undermines everyone and has recently started playing with nepotism. Dude's been trying to buy the company since the owner is looking to retire. It's been going on for about 6 years now and nothing has happened. I'm about to pull rank and find the owner an actual buyer.

No!! Most of my bosses have been fucking demons that make me fear for my income and ability to pay rent and not be homeless. Bullies. Have lost jobs too because they bully. Have some respect for others especially if you are in a position of power. I do think such positions attract a certain type of person.

I treat bosses the same way I treat anyone. Either they earn my respect or they don't. Their position matters little to me. I'm not dumb enough to follow someone's lead just because their position gives them more authority than me. I think for myself and follow who I trust and ignore the ones I don't.

During my career, I was fortunate to have several good bosses who I respected. I think I only had one bad boss, and he didn't last long before he left the company.

I've had both.

When I was junior, my managers were almost all good. Sure they had strengths and weaknesses, but they all had certain things I admired and sought to emulate.

Since I've been in senior roles my very senior managers have been a combination of truly exceptional and truly woeful.

I'm not sure if my mileage is different than others. But it does seem a little odd that the more you pay for a position the more random is the quality of the person filling it.
