I hadn't heard of these bands before but I'll try... Hotel Books spoken words segments remind me a bit of Xiu Xiu:

And also, in another way, Dystopia's 'Human = Garbage'

In another way still, Tom Waits circa 'Blue Valentine'

Also, this Hotel Books band is really fucking obscure omfg, how did you find out about these guys without finding out about similar bands? Are they a local band? Anyway, more in the genre style, you might like 'blackgaze' stuff. I think the best of the scene are:
Ghost Bath: (please dont watch the video, it kills it - play the song & open another tab, lol)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8VLUVUf4zIQ
and Boss de Nages: (no single song samples for this on yt, so you get the full album...)

You might even like black metal, honestly. 'Sad' and 'poetic' are two of its three major elements - the third is, unfortunatelly, usually 'white supremacy', which makes it a tough sell. There are exceptions, though! The subgenre 'Depressive Suicidal Black Metal' seems particularly relevant, although it's the genre in which I have the least experience (except for the infamous DEATH -- PIERCE ME) - one a lot of people like is Weakling - Dead as Dreams:

Listener is probably the #1 recommendation I can give you.
The Front Bottoms have a style similar to Hotel Books, but they're usually a bit more upbeat.
Sage Francis has several deeper, sad tracks, you might enjoy him.
