I would argue that Mai is. Most other goth girls are either emotionally unstable or have a tragic backstory. Mai has the worst of the lot - she's surrounded by people who have grown meaningfully through difficulties in their lives, while she hasn't. The awareness of such a metaphysical fact makes her more "goth" than any of them.
