What's the best remake/cover song that you've ever heard?

I can not pick just one, and I remember different ones all the time. So here's round 1. LOL I can say "among my favorites are":
* Hard To Handle" - Black Crowes do Otis Redding
* Roll Over Beethoven - The Beatles do Chuck Berry
* Piece of my Heart - Janis Joplin - yes, it's not the original, Janis does Erma Franklin
* Till You Come Back To Me - Basia does Stevie Wonder
* Smooth Criminal - Alien Ant Farm does Michael Jackson
* No Matter What - Jellyfish does Badfinger
* I Ain't Superstitious - Jeff Beck and Rod Stewart do a Willie Dixon song first recorded by Howlin' Wolf
More to come ! Sorry, I can't pick a best one. These are ALL great remakes.
Hard to Handle, yesssss!!!
And I am a little ashamed that I didn't know Piece of My Heart didn't belong to Janis!!! Gah
You're not alone. Almost nobody knows that. The original version was recorded in 1967 by Erma Franklin, Aretha's sister. This is her in 1992 sounding as good as EVER !

Round 2 :
* Nothing Compares 2 U - Sinead does Prince
* Summertime Blues - SO MANY groups have redone this song, but my favorite by far is The Who, Live at Leeds. Keith Moon was alive and well and in amazing form, as were they all.
* Unchained Melody - Todd Duncan (who?) did this for a movie soundtrack. But there is no version as good as the Righteous Brothers.
* A Certain Girl - the dude who brought you "Mother in Law", Ernie K. Doe, had a hit with this in 1961. But it doesn't compare to Warren Zevon's version - no one's does
* Crossroads - Cream does Elmore James
* It's Gonna Take A Miracle - A little known girl group called the Royalettes had a minor hit with this song back in 1965. Denice Williams did a horrible, but more popular version in 1982 (elevator music). But in 1971, Laura Nyro made an album with Patti LaBelle and the Bluebells called "It's Gonna Take A Miracle" with great remakes on it. If their version doesn't make you shiver, ya ain't got no soul. I know you will, KFAK...

A lot of remakes are almost exactly like the original, so why bother, right? Here's an exception. Mind you, the original is fabulous - Dusty Springfield had a powerful, soulful, kick ass voice. And so does this girl, my current crush who I'm so freaking in love with !! Josh Stone !!

Thank you for sharing these!! Erma and Joss blew me away!
Nice to hear REAL music, isn't it?
Johnny Cash's version of "Hurt" - originally by Nine Inch Nails.
"Killing Me Softly with His Song" - covered by Fugees - originally by Roberta Flack.
More recently, Disturbed did a fine cover of "The Sound of Silence" - the classic by Simon & Garfunkel. ...
But, Johnny's "Hurt" is the best cover I've ever heard; the fact that his wife & he both died shortly after filming the video makes it all the more heartbreaking.

Well, Newzion already mentioned Hendrix's All along the Watchtower.
There's Roberta Flak's cover of Killing Me Softly
And of course this... ;)
https://www.youtube.com/embed/N9qYF9DZPdw Some good ones!
Side note, I just realized that I don't know the ACTUAL words to Gangster's Paradise-- just the Weird Al version.
I am a sucker for radio disney remixes like I want you to want me covered by a girl band and featured. I can't remember the name... Another that sticks out is I think I love you, formerly David Cassidy from the partridge family was given a pop twist. I just love the high energy. But the wizards of waverly place soundtrack is a good example. You wait for the new kids songs but then go... wait... I've heard that before... where do I know that... At least 75 are all covers with a special favorite of olivia Newton johns magic. It is fun when old songs get a special twist or revision

For me Jolene by Miley Chris is better than the original by Dolly Parton.

Some Dylan cover versions were great , Mr. Tambourine Man with the Bryds even better All along the watchtower with Hendrix, and Hendrix own Purple Rain cover version with Prince are great.
Hallelujah jeff Buckley with the long guitar intro 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Jeff Buckley is one of my favorite musicians of all time and it all started with Hallelujah.
