PIÑATAS, are they a party fun OR or a cruel joke?

Yes. Cruel! Think about it. You find one that looks like an animal or character fill it with candy and hang it from a tree. Then you blindfold a child give him or her a hard bat or stick to violently strike it until it so hurt it spills outs it's gut. Not only that but then you spin the kid around so their dizzy, and then try to make the kid miss by making the piñata go up and down.
When you finally abuse the piñata enough the candy spills out and kids go rushing in head first for treats usually hurting each other in the process.

So yeah, I can see how that's really fun. Teaching kids how to violently hurt some effigy of an animal or favorite character.

Kind've have to say both

It's a challenge for the kids with rewards afterwards
Fun for the adults to watch/shout out helpful instructions to a disoriented child
and it's a train wreck when one kid inevitably swings the bat too wide and wacks an adult in the crotch

It's party fun AND a cruel joke all in a fancy cardboard package. (Although if you really wanna have fun, make it yourself with paper mache and let the kids go all out. If you built it REALLY well then the adults get to go too!!!)

It's all in good fun. You can just as easily say water gun fights is actually training kids to shoot people for fun.

Are you under the impression that pinatas aren't socially acceptable? We all have destructive impulses; the humans that didn't we were destroyed by the ones that did. It's why we delight in building towers with blocks and delight in knocking them down. It's why our country builds both construction equipment and nuclear submarines.

Yep, but word choice doesn't really matter, it's an inanimate object that's designed to get smashed. As long as you know not to hit people, animals or property then you should be fine.
