Looking back, what are your thoughts on Sex And The City?

For those of you who watched the show, what did think of it back then and now?

I used to love it and was obsessed after in came out on dvd, because the unedited version were 10x better.

It’s been almost 20 years since the show has ended.

I’ve noticed it’s a trend now on twitter to rant about how “horrible” the show was and how “typified” all of the main characters were.

I admit Carrie was obnoxious and overreacted to a lot of things, and some of the shows topic choices and sentiments are now a bit dated or questionable.

But I can’t help but still love it. I love the humor and how sisterly the girls were.

Thoughts?

I have mixed feelings. It definitely had a lot of positive influence on how society talks about sex and helped get rid of some of the outdated taboos regarding sexual topics. But yeah, some of what happens and is being said in the show is pretty outdated and insensitive from today's perspective.
My biggest issue with it was always the class thing. The were four women living in absolute luxury in one of the most expensive cities in the world. Who is this supposed to speak to? It's just so ambivalent to me, on the one hand the whole concept of the show is to be super realistic and open about sex (at least for back then), but then the protagonists basically don't even live in the real world.

Yeah, exactly. And class - that’s another thing. We’re supposed to believe that Carrie was able to afford a Manhattan apartment while regularly dining out and buying expensive shoes on one newspaper sex column’s salary? Not likely. Later on, she makes it big and has her book but I don't know. I think she’d have to write for 3 or 4 different newspapers in order to afford the lifestyle that was portrayed. I guess it was just supposed to hook the audience with the fantasy of it all.

Yeah, that's what I meant when I said they're not living in the real world. In NYC she'd be in a tiny apartment and couldn't afford any of the activities she participates in in the show. Like, why create a show that is the first one to be so realistic about sex, and then make it so unrealistic in regards to the protagonist's lifestyle? It kinda ruins the concept.

I think it's a very American thing. Showing the middle class what they'll never have and making them believe they could have it. I'll never understand why Americans are so turned on by watching rich people live their luxury lives.

One of my favourite TV series. I have the entire collection + the movies.

The humor is good. I felt relax and laugh even after watching more than once.

I like the way it empowers women to open up and fight against the stigma of "good girls should not talk or have promiscuous sex".

And I like the depicting of Single's society so closely by mere four women: one more Conservative, one outrageously promiscuous, one from the middle / high class, one from the working class.

You know who I refer to right?

So yes, I like the TV but no so much the movies (particularly the one with Middle East theme because its a bit outrageous).

It's too focused on older women who have careers and can't find a husband.
I think they had too many sex interests.

It wasn't really similar to my life at all.
I found the right guy in my 20s and married him and have a nice life. I never had sex with any other men before so... not up my alley but great for those who it did affect.

I will say that a woman’s path in life is worth some heavy consideration before choices are made. There are also women who chose kids over career who regret that too.

I found it interesting seeing life through their eyes.
It had it's funny side but also it's dark side.
I don't know why but I didn't watch the films

It was awful. It basically has no plot and promotes materialism, consumerism and hookup culture

I liked the show... entertaining. My least favorite character however, was the main one... Carrie.
