Hiragana was originally based on cursive Chinese.

I put Hangul because I have a lot of Korean friends and think the linguistic origins are cool, but the Chinese characters look nice.

Yeah I think Hangul looks cool too. I think it's the most unique East Asian script aside from Kanji and the others.
