From someone who was there, and for whom the John Hughes films were actually aimed: I can tell you this: It was, in retrospect, a lot better time than we realized. And it definitely was an improvement from the utter malaise and doldrums of the 1970's.
The films looked like they had a meaning, even if some of them seemed "cheesy."
The music both touched the soul and made you want to dance, minus that hair metal crap lol.
The hair metal led to Grunge (largely as a backlash against hair metal) so there is that.

i like both 80 and 90 haha but anything later yeah is very dull
Badass isn't the word I would use. Having said that, if I had a time machine I'd go back there now.
