Wow what an incredible movie! and damn that ending makes me wanna see more. makes me want to read the books.
Anyways if you haven't seen it yet, its fantastic. Denis Villeneuve is probably hollywoods best working director at this moment. he's just been putting out great work
As a massive fan of the source material I absolutely loved it. Having said that, there's some shit that they fucked up on, but I'll divy it up as follows: -Glossu Harkonnen (Bautista) is once again dummed down considerably from the books for the sake of runtime and his character, just as the previous incarnation, is basically just a big brute for the Baron. He's not really a true character here, just some asshole force of evil, which is what the Baron should be (and still is) while Glossu has actual depths in the book. -The whole reason the Atreides are being exterminated in the book to begin with is their growing popularity and power within the Empire begins unsettling the Padishah Emperor, who fears a coup but knows that if he just flat-out eliminates and eradicates them entirely and openly the other Houses will likely initiate a coup against him out of fear of being targeted next so that he can consolidate power. This is why the Sardaukar are inserted covertly along with the Harkonnen troops to make it look like a solely Harkonnen effort of one Great House eliminating the other (think the Boltons eliminating the Starks while the Iron Throne just sort of stands by and lets it happen without condoning it). In this film, they give no fucks and send the Sardaukar in there right out in the open, which really makes a glaring plot hole as a result. -Paul's visions and mental acuity of the future are presented as something unorthodox here. In reality, a common usage of Spice Melange is to raise mental acuity in people, it's what makes Foldspace travel possible in the books and premonitions of the future are a side effect. This was done for this film to make Paul seem as though he is special, which he really isn't in the books. In fact, the opposite, he's kind of a fuck-up at first. -Dr. Yueh is a Mentat. Apparently to Denis Villeneuve that means he's a Bene Gesserit because that's basically what his abilities in this film are akin to. Ironically the Bene Gesserit seen here are closer to the Mentats.
As for pros: -First off: Stellan Skarsgaard as Baron Harkonnen. That is all. -Second off: Oscar Isaac as Duke Leto Atreides. That is also all. -This film shows us both Caladan (the Atreides homeworld) and the Padishah Empire Delegation sent to offer them Arrakis right off the bat in the very first scene. When I saw that, I almost shit my pants because we never got that in the books, the books start with them already heading to Arrakhis. -We saw Salusa Secundus in the book, as we do here. What we never saw was such an in-depth building in scenes of the Sardaukar and their actual culture. The books make them out to be blood knight-type warriors and the best and most highly skilled but that's kind of it... here they're literally portrayed as basically space vikings and it's kinda fuckin' scary. -The fact that we never actually see or hear the Padishah Emperor in this version and only hear about him and his goals from others (Harkonnen mainly) is somehow so much more fucking intimidating and badass. And I suspect it will make the inevitable sequel that much cooler. -This version of The Fremen is way better than the 80s movie. What sold it for me is when they show up out of nowhere near the end and pretty much fucking instantly slaughter all the Sardaukar. Which, actually if you pay attention to the environment of Salusa Secundus (their homeworld), kinda makes sense (like Caladan, it appears to be wet and forested). -I like the actress who plays Lady Jessica here better than the chick from the 80s movie even though she really doesn't do a whole lot.
Just for non-book readers, this film quite obviously set out to adapt the first two-thirds of the book. It stops roughly little more than halfway. So I suspect the sequel will be the continued adaptation of the rest of the source material. I fucking love this insofar as how much world building was able to be done with it. And tbh the second half is gonna be pretty fuckin' lit when it happens.
I also just love so fucking much the little details that Villeneuve put in this film that he didn't have to but did anyway that make it just that much more interesting to watch/unsettling. Like, all of the Harkonnen Court's people are fucking deathly pale, hairless (they actually hired albino hairless extras for these scenes), have no fingernails and those creepy fucking black beady eyes. Really sells how fucking desolate their homeworld must be and how loyal they are to the Empire and why they're so ready to just get rid of the Atreides: Not only do they likely NEEED Arrakis' sunlight, they desperately want to prove their loyalty to the Emperor. Also I'm happy they decided not to include Harkonnen's proclivity with young boys, I could've done without that in the book. He was already evil enough.
Also I don't know what the fuck that multi-limbed Human-looking fucked up thing was in Baron Harkonnen's Court in the background the whole time. But it definitely wasn't in the book and I couldn't focus on a single scene as a result of it.
Also I forgot to mention that they don't really touch upon the combat regression much. The whole reason that the galaxy reverted back to swordplay and close-quarters combat is because of the shields blocking all but the lowest of velocity weapons rendering laser and projectile cannons useless. In this film during the Atreides Massacre, the Harkonnen artillery is blasting bitches left and right and the swordplay isn't quite as refined as the book or previous adaptations.
I'm saying "meh" but really that's being generous. It's a bad film, but if you're just going into it expecting nothing more than a bunch of fancy CGI and explosions, you probably won't be disappointed. If you're hoping for anything more than that (maybe a complex plot and lots of political intrigue?), then you definitely will be - it's certainly no "Game of Thrones in Space", as I've seen it described by some.
Part of the problem is that the Dune books have been around for so long, and had such a strong influence on everything that followed, that you're left feeling there's nothing in this movie you haven't seen many times before. The closest comparison is probably Avatar, but set in a desert, and with slightly less shitty CGI.

One of my friends has moved to London for university and is so close to where Zendaya is or was for the DUNE premiere we’ve all been telling my friend: “You need to go and find her!” Because if she meets Zendaya it’s basically like we’ve all met Zendaya- technically it’s basically the same thing😂😂💀🙊🤪✌🏾✨✨
I saw it (here is out from some weeks). I have recently re-read the book. I didn't like the film. It is not Dune. It's a scenically beautiful film, but: 1) The actors are mediocre. Except the one who plays Baron Harkonnen. 2) They changed characters with woke methodologies and distorted the story. 3) the book is purely introspective, the film has nothing introspective at all. 4) The book is narrated by Irulan, who does not appear in the film for now. 5) They have wrinkled parts of the book to exalt irrelevant actors. Gurney Halleck's character becomes disregarded, the doctor's character is barely hinted at. Lady Jessica becomes too emotional to be a Bene Gesserit. The Fremen are not hugely stronger than the Sardaukers like in the book.
I only wish they made both movies at once as a sort of tv series duology. Right now it ended kind of randomly in the middle. The worlds in the background seem a bit empty. But other than that, it's pretty damn good. It gives me hope that Hollywood could actually start making good films again, once they pull their heads out of their woke asses. Dune shows it's not impossible.

Dune sounds boring, then my dad told me one of the main characters ain't even in this film who is essential to the plot and he's read the book. So i will just take his word for it. So nah.
Ugh i hate films that set up for sequels tbh. A film is better contained to it's self. Then a sequel been something that is thought of later on. If you want a sequal just do a series but even series that are self contained to a limited amount of seasons and episodes are way better than stuff like walking dead were they just kept it going bleh.

I am a huge fan of the original material, I have read Frank Herbert's book, seen the 1984 movie and played Cryo's 1992 computer game. I am not sure if I want to see this remake, however...
I have seen it and liked it but did not love it. The seens are shot beautifully and the acting is good. The story is good but seemed to wonder off a few times. I do recomend it!

Seen it. Didn't expect them to make it in two parts. Although the story is far better told than in the old movie. Without knowing the book you almost couldn't get whats going on in the old movie. Visuals and cinematography in the new movie are also outstanding and acting is top
yeah the books are amazing i hear, but even among book fans, they are saying this is pretty damn faithful to it. there's gonna be a part 2 in a couple years too
Visually stunning and followed the book pretty well. Streaming it was kind of frustrating because it goes from blasting soundtrack to whispering actors. I had to keep adjusting the volume.
Cinematical and tonally it's a wonder. I'm sure there are many who's finding it too slow or uninteresting. But to me it's so far probably the best take I have seen on book adaption.
