We have a whole category called Gekiga (劇画) for that. An example is Ikegami's Crying Freeman:

They are not pornographic but contain their share of adult content and more dramatic themes.

Also Kazuo Koike (Lone Wolf and Cub).

Cheers! There is also Seinen here which is usually targeted at younger adults around 18 or so. They tend to be more fantastic and less mundane in their themes but @UniquelyBasic cited a prime example with Berserk.

There's also the legendary Milo Manara from Italy although his comics are "adult" more in the erotic type of way. But maybe still in the realm of something beautiful and tasteful at least within the nature of his subjects -- not full-blown pornography but "graphic erotica":

I used to dream of becoming an illustrator and comic book illustrator appealed to me most (was a visual arts double major along with CompSci). I went with CompSci but I especially loved Gekiga and wanted to try to create comic books revolving around the most mundane of themes, like the life of an office worker or a married man or woman.
