It seems Selena was more poised to do so. I really only remember one song of Aaliyah's.
I have a very fond memory of hearing Selena's music. It was in 1997 when I was visiting Joshua Tree National Monument. It was the year I began teaching, and the year Comet Hale Bopp appeared in the sky and every night I marveled at it! Only weeks after the following incident, I met my wife. One afternoon I drove out to the location of Camp Iron Mountain, where they trained during WW II for the invasion of North Africa. My uncle trained there (that uncle would die two years after my visit). It was a really interesting afternoon because I located Camp Iron Mountain (at that time it was not signed and I had to drive over unpaved desert roads in my Hyundai!). The only thing that remained were the foundations of the chapel and the altar and a relief map (which was much eroded... I wonder if it's still there) that Patton used. It was before widespread cellphone use, so I was worried about my car breaking down because it really is isolated and in the center of the Mojave Desert. The whole place had a certain haunted feeling to it, like you could feel the ghosts of the thousands of soldiers who trained there. Any rate, as I drove back to my camp in Joshua Tree, the sun was setting, and I came back in range of a radio station in 29 Palms, which is the location of a Marine base. Evidently the base was having an open house, because there were lots of marines calling the station telling how they were preparing to receive guests and lots of dedications to sweethearts who were coming to visit. But one dedication from a Sgt. Martinez stood out (I'm for whatever reason unlikely to ever forget his name). He said how he couldn't wait to see his fiance again, how much he loved her, and how he was looking forward to spending the rest of his life with her. Such... unbounded optimism about their future. And he dedicated the song "I Could Fall in Love" to her! It was deliciously beautiful to drive through the vast, empty desert at sunset and listen to Selena's haunting and sweet voice, feeling the dry, warm wind on my face. That empty, rocky landscape seemed alive with romance at that moment. And that evening, as I sat by myself at my campfire eating my rations under a million jewel-like stars, comet Hale Bopp's tail streaming like a ghost in the velvet black sky, while coyotes bayed, I felt so very happy while that song played over and over in my mind. And I hope that Sgt. Martinez found love and that he is still with her. And several years later when I was a teacher, one student of mine who was... sensitive and very sweet, came to my class singing Bidi Bidi Bom Bom. She marveled at my "psychic powers" in deducing her parents must have had a karaoke machine. Any rate, she believed that the song was written by Selena Gomez. I corrected her and told her it was a different Selena. She asked me why she hadn't heard of this other Selena, and I explained to her that Selena was murdered. Then my student began to cry! She put her arms around me and sobbed! I felt really bad for my student! I gave her a hug and let her cry it out, my shoulder becoming tear stained. That student took an interest in Selena and later that year wrote a biographical essay about her that I could tell she poured her heart into. My friend's wife is Latina, and her entire family LOVES Selena. She and my friend danced to her music at their wedding. Selena was a great singer whose music had a life and spirit that seemed to find the best in people.
Talk about coincidences I got goosebumps. When I saw the heading I immediately had my Alexa start playing Selena. Bidi bibi bom bom came on first then como La flor. At that point I was scanning the replies below. I began to read yours at the exact moment I began to read yours story about Sgt. Martinez requested song... My Alexa began to play I could fall in Love. Tingling rushed over me as I'm listening to the same song by chance as I read on.
Thank you for sharing. Its a lovely reply.
Absolutely. Or as close to 100% sure as I can be making a hypothetical educated guess. They were both very talented. If I could only choose one of the two, I'd say Aaliyah, because Aaliyah's career was a bit further along than Selena's career, and I believe Aaliyah was slightly more talented than Selena.
I remember the songs "Somebody" and "Try Again" (that may not be their actual titles).
She was also in the vampire movie "Queen Of The Damned", which was really good.
I never saw Romeo Must Die.

As @Bluemax mentioned I don't remember much of Aaliyah. I had to look her up and then I remembered Rock the Boat. Now Selena... I believe she would have made it BIG. Her songs meant a lot to many people and even this generation is hearing her songs.
I loved her cassette as a kid. I cried when I over played it and it became tangled. 97 to 99 were very hard years for me. Her music got me through some tough times.
Aaliyah would’ve been in Beyonces spot rn and Selena wouldve been in JLo’s spot
Selena was popular with mostly latinos and blacks. Aaliyah was popular with mostly blacks and Asians. But both would've dominated and had some of every ethnicity looking up to them
Yea Jlo can't sing and she honestly can’t act unless its a romcom. Her dancing is fly but not beyonce ciara aaliyah level.

I grew up on Aaliyah & Selena back in the days. I saw Aaliyah live in concert in 1999 and Selena in the early 90s, they were great Female Artists at that time. I believe if they were alive today, they would be considered legends of today. It's been over 20 years since they been gone but their music still lives on. I love them both and I always play my favorite tracks till days: Aaliyah "Are you that Somebody" and "I Miss You"; Selena "Bidi Bidi Bom Bom", "I can fall love with you", and "Dreaming of you".
I don't think so. Yes, they were talented but today's music scenario wouldn't be good for them. When they were famous singers actually knew how to sing and their lyrics made sense. Nowadays you just have to show your body, get plastic surgery and say nonsensical and/or offensive things.
I miss Aaliyah, sometimes I wonder how she would be now.
i said the same thing but i also feel that they would’ve definitely still stayed true to themselves especially with the plastic surgery stuff but with music as well. i’m sure whatever new material they put out would’ve been a breathe of fresh air compared to the music we have now..
Yeah. I think Selena's crossover would have been successful, dreaming of you and I could fall in love were beautiful songs, and she had the charisma and a good singing voice.
La llamada and bidi bidi bom bom
I'll admit it i loved her in the 90's so tragic :(
I never heard of Aaliyah, only Selena but I do theink she would've gone on top right now. I'm going to check Aaliyah right now, although I will say now the she would've gone to the top too <3
Maybe Selena for Latinos. But Aliyah would've been forgotten long ago.
no true for Aaliyah 😭 y'all must not know her impact very well.
🤣🤣🤣
