What was your gateway into Metal music?

It was way back in the ancient time of 2007. My buddy had Guitar Hero 3 and on it was Through the Fire and the Flames. It was a week later I picked up the album it was on. Inhuman Rampage by Dragonforce. Cheesy I know, but I live for that shit. And the rest is history.

My uncle growing up. He was listening to the so called "devils music" and shared it with me. Though the people calling it "devils music" where a gateway as well. Because their anti-heavy metal rhetoric only sparked my interest. Funny enough the same people spouting the insane rhetoric where probably the same people that though because I grew up listening to heavy metal, watching horror movies and playing videos, I was destined to be the next school shooter after Columbine. Kind of funny how that worked.

It's also funny thinking that the same people probably grew up listening to Elvis due to all the insane rhetoric being thrown at him during his early career. Because if you listen to it some people where pretty much convinced that a girl would instantly become pregnant at one of his shows or they would start sleeping around after listening to his music.

I used to find music through the old ITunes recommendations or just look up random words and going through all the songs they had. My sister listened to Avril Lavigne and Three Days Grace and Pink n shit. So I got into Three Days Grace, which lead me eventually to Disturbed and Skillet. Then on Pandora over the course of like six years I slowly got into harder rock n stuff. Eventually Stranded By Gojira came on and it was way different than the metal I had been hearing. I’m super into Gojira now and use Pandora still to find music. I also like a lot of Mastodon and Chevelle.

Hard to say. My dad is a musician and my mom is a metalhead. From the moment I was born I was already surrounded by it. I can say my dad had an influence in me also becoming a musician and having appreciation for collecting physical media.

As for the music itself, my earliest memories are of riding in the car hearing things like AC/DC, Rob Zombie, Metallica, Prong, Monster Magnet, Danzig, etc. Honestly it was a very eclectic mix of metal. From the moment I learned how to talk I would constantly sing along to it all every time it played.

My dad listened to a lot of classic rock or rock from the 60s-80s, and he played the music out loud in the house. He went to hundreds and hundreds of concerts growing up, and he would show me his drawer of ticket stubs. He would pull up a youtube video of the concert he was at that was filmed. That stuck with me.


So when I entered middle school, I had my classic rock music taste already there. I had my little angsty teenage phase and I listened to a lot of 2000-2010s rock or emo music. I have a whole spotify playlist of music I listened to, and over the years I just kept adding to it and found new bands. I really liked metal music after I started listening to it more often.


Funnily enough, I ditched the rock and metal music once I hit freshman year of high school, all the way to freshman year of college. I began to listen to my old playlist again like 8 months ago lol.
