Some of the Sonic the Hedgehog and Final Fantasy games have the best music

Star Control 2's was fantastic, both the PC and tde 3DO; I actually had the Melnorme music as my phone's ringtone for a while, and the Supox victory theme is still my text noise. Final Fantasy was good, too, as you've noted- I really only noticed the first's, though, as later games were more plot- and character- heavy, while the first was clearly an adapted D&D campaign. Wing Commander had music, too- the torpedo run theme is my *current* phone's ringtone, and the surf music version of the main theme will always hold a place in my heart.

I don't know if it's QUITE what you mean, since it's more "scarily appropriate" than "excellent in its own right", but the menu theme of Undying is also spine-tingling. And it's cheating, since it's mostly from the show, but the music used in the Freespace 2 med "The Babylon Project" is excellent (the show's music is nothing shy of outstanding; I actually have a few CDs of it, but it tends to get overshadowed by other outstanding aspects).

And of course, there's Cdristopher Tin's Babu Yetu, from Civilization 4, the first piece ef wideo game music to ever win an Emmy. Or was it a Grammy? Whichever one's the music one.

LaTale's OST. That hidden gem have the best one hands down and there's so many of it. Usually fantasy games have that cliche orchestral vibes but this game sounds diverse. There's actually more to that game i'd like to share.

Final fantasy, metal gear, mass effect would probably be my top 3. Assassins creed IV black flag maybe but thats a bit of cheating as these are actually real sea chanties.
