Guys, what are your opinions on Star Wars?

Star Wars as Lucas devised it was essentially the full incarnation of Campellian monomyth; storytelling distilled down to its essential form. Star Wars as of the prequels... Look, this is not a popular sentiment, but it's true: all real art comes from demons. Not *literal* demons, usually, but they're no less real for that. If the artist is lucky, the demons go away; if the audience is lucky, they don't. George Lucas, by the late 90's, was FAR the desperate and angry young man he'd been back in the 70's. When we meet Han Solo, one of the first things we see him do is blow away a mafia debt collector, than toss a car to the bartender with a quip that Joss Whedon might've written. That is NOT the writing of a happy, well-adjusted person, especially in the light of the fact that Han's a GOOD GUY (well, not a bad one, at least).

The prequels were intended as a Greek tragedy, and while most would agree they didn't quite succeed, it's not hard to see what they were TRYING to be. Attack of the Clones even had a different and potentially really interesting detective side story, with Obi-Wan trying to find a missing planet. But it got bogged down hopelessly with a badly done romantic subplot- SO badly done that it BECAME a subplot, despite kind of being the point of the movie.

But let's go back to the OT era. Obi-Wan confirmed to Luke that he'd fought in the Clone Wars. What were those? Well, we'd eventually learn that they were a conflict between a cloned army and one of droids, but back in the 70's, people had no idea. They thought... well, I don't know; I wasn't born until 1992. But by the time my brother introduced me to Star Wars, the commonly accepted idea was that the "clones" in question were JEDI- the movies suggested there was a genetic component to Force sensitivity; it'd make sense to create an army of battle wizards that could fight for you. This could also lead to them rebelling, since who wants to be a slave to your inferiors, and provide a justification for Palpatine and Vader hunting them down to wipe them out, because they'd rebelled and presumably terrified and killed a lot of people. A whole WORLD of potential plot options, and all from one throwaway line. That, in essence, was what Star Wars WAS, back then; limitless potential, in a perfectly relatable way. The books and video games expanded even further on it, turning it into a world that felt fully real.

Then came Disney. Disney does not understand Star Wars. Disney under Walt might- and I stress MIGHT- have been able to, but the company of today is all about profit and control. Walt wanted money, too- the man was as capitalistic as they come- but he understood the importance of storytelling and EARNING the money you make. He built Disneyland as a place EVERY American family would be able to go to; modern Disney isn't interested in anyone but the super-rich. Modern Disney saw Star Wars as *kid's movies*, and, well, you can see the result. I doubt a single person involved in high-level decision-making there has EVER read Joseph Campbell or Mercea Eliade. They took the single most profitable IP in human history and flushed it down the damn toilet. And they ruined something truly magical.

I used to like it a lot, but almost everything produced since the Disney takeover except for Rogue One and Squadrons has been mediocre at best, and hot garbage more often than not. I'm not going to waste time doing a deep dive as to why, but the short version is because Disney has largely dumbed it down into being cartoonishly stupid.

It is a very good universe, an excellent franchise, and, thankfully in more movies than not, a good story.
Despite the current changes and criticisms (no matter if right or wrong, deserved or not), I will always find Star Wars interesting and I would gladly recommend it to everyone.

Star Wars is okay, but its main emphasis is on special effects. Star Trek is more interesting, with its characters and their interactions more important than the special effects.

The old.. old movies from the beginning I like. It’s like all series…they get old.

I hear the new show is good but the brand itself has really died for me with those new god awful movies

I Love Star Wars, I grew up on it, and that franchise still have more to offer in the future.
