IS IT OKAY TO NOT LOOK LIKE A “METALHEAD”?

Ever since I was 5 my brother introduced me to megadeath, slipknot, Dio, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden etc! I’m in love with metal, but the thing is… people assumed by my looks that I like Harry styles or indie music, like cavetown and such. But the thing is I’m very quiet in general and introvert like so I have no idea why they think that.

anyways my question is, is it okay to look “sweet and cute” but listen to metal? Or should you fit the absolute stereotype to meet others like you?

Of course it is… you’re being yourself. That’s one thing I never understood about people. It’s like they find a scene growing up and embody the stereotype 1000% thinking they’re being cool or unique or rebellious… by literally buying into an established scene with its own set of gimmicks and “rules” or whatever. I just find it ironic…

Like they think they’re being different, but they’re actually not being different at all. Being just like most other kids that adopt a trend, or aesthetic, and go all in on personifying it… they’re still “fitting in” to something. It’s a false front and forced…

in my opinion, it’s always best to just be you… you’ll filter out a lot of trouble, drama, and fake people that way. I always found a lot in common with all kinds of people growing up, but never quite fit in with all the social groups. I never passed judgement on these people, just found it odd that they’d go THAT far to try and fit in, I guess… I don't know. Like I said, I never quite understood it.

Second: it is absolutely NOT required to look the part. If it was me, I'd never get tired of seeing the look of confusion if someone would think I'd listen to indie music only to then melt their brain when they try my headphones as the opening riff from Savage Messaiah's "Down and Out" pierces their skull and fuses their synapses together while their brain explodes.

But again, looking the part in not a requirement. I've seen some pretty basic looking people show up to some non mainstream concerts.

The best thing you can do is look however you want and be whoever you want. In fact, conformity is the most un-metal thing I can think of. Even if that means "conforming" to a perceived stereotype of what someone who listens to metal "should" look like. Embrace the things you like and are inclined to be, and just be yourself and enjoy the music you like! 🙂

Yeah of course it is. I have a few friends that have never looked like metalheads and you wouldn't think they ever listen to it. They dress pretty much casually. I like metal as well but I do listen to other music as well such as classical and electronic, industrial. I don't think the stereotypical metalhead applies these days.

Your look should not define your music type. You can look like a preppy kid and like rap music or you can look like a punk rocker but love classical music.
