The greatest musician of all time? That has to be Mozart in any case.

He was composer, text writer, conductor and choreographer. There is not one single person dead or alive that has achieved what he did.

Today's music cannot be compared to the ones that existed during from the baroque to the classical periods (1600-1830) where music was mostly harmonious and composers did know their trade.

There was little plagiarism like it is today, no electronic music, no boom boom boom noise that some call music. Unfortunately, the further we move in time the less the noise that is produced can be called music and songwriters are not really very inventive when it comes to composing texts.

In terms of music and lyrics quality, we turned back to the level existing at the time of the cavemen. What a shame!

I don't know about "greatest", but if you're looking for new (or overlooked) ones, give Warren Zevon a shot. Most people who've heard of him only know him because of "Werewolves of London", which is a crying shame. Many of his songs- "Poor, poor pitiful me", "Hasten down the wind", "Mohammed's Radio", and of course "Accidentally Like a Martyr", to name but a few- had their most famous versions recorded by other artists.
