It depends on why I'm sad.
17 years ago, my best friend's boyfriend wouldn't allow her to talk to me anymore and I got so sad and depressed over it, I put together a collection of music that we both like and listened to it over and over again for months on end and spent a LOT of time crying over her!!
Whatever fits the mood I'm in works.
This one just sprang to mind.

When I am down, I do not like listening to music. When I was in my ealry 20s, I would listen to Bon Jovi. But it changed with time. Even in sickness, I never listen to music.
I rather remember passages from the holy book and say them repetitively (as a prayer) for the ones I remember.
