Who is a well-written female character that you like?

Just curious mostly since a lot of female characters either start off bad and remain bad or start off good but ends up bad. I've also noticed there has been very few females characters that I liked. I think Vivy from Vivy: Fluorite Eye's Song being one of them, don't judge me lol. Her character was well written and not annoying in any sense. The whole series was just pretty good to be honest.

What makes a good female character in your opinion?

There's plenty of females characters I think are pretty poorly written (not necessarily attacking the shows since sometimes the plot is actually really good, but the character isn't). Owl House was one show I got recommended a lot but ended up disliking it since the characters were written in a extremely watered down manner, some goes for the dialogue. Sometimes it isn't even the character that is bad but rather the idea of the character- so basically that one annoying female character that is written well, they feel and act human, but suck anyways. I think you can name a few lol.

Agreed on Owl House. It's really not as good as advertised. HOWEVER, Gravity Falls is good. Mabel is a really well-written character, even if some other female characters are not so much. Wendy is pretty well-written too to be fair.

But here is my list of legitimately good female characters that I like. There is another list of well-written female characters I dislike (Cruella DeVille). Some of these are even GREAT characters period--some of my favorite overall, even more than most male characters. They are from all sorts of media.

I'll start with anime and manga since they are CRAWLING with both well and poorly written female characters. Most female characters from Fullmetal Alchemist are impossible to hate (Winry, Izumi, and Riza Hawkeye stand out). Faye Valentine is incredibly well written in Cowboy Bebop. The girls from Kaguya-sama: Love is War are great. Takagi from Teasing Master Takagi-san is great. The Nakano sisters from Quintessential Quintuplets are shockingly good. I like a few Naruto and My Hero Academia ladies too, but there are a lot of them. Marin Kitigawa is good. I have a lot more but feel like I should wind down lol I can PM you if you want more.

Raven and Starfire from Teen Titans, and all the girls from Avatar: The Last Airbender. Kim possible.

Juliet O'Hara from Psych. Natalie Teager and others from Monk. The Mentalist had good ones. Castle. Sue Thomas: FBI. Doc. Lots of other shows.

Eowyn, Arwen, and Galadriel are really good female characters from TLotR. Lucy and Susan from the Chronicles of Narnia by C. S. Lewis. The unnamed female alien from Perelandra by C. S. Lewis. Irene Adler from Sherlock Holmes is good. Mrs. Hudson from the same series is also a RIOT. Love her.

Several come to mind from movies and TV as well as books, so here are one of each.

The character of Elizabeth Sloane from the 2016 movie Miss Sloane, played by Jessica Chastain, is fantastic. She is smart, witty, and terribly flawed. She's selfish, arrogant, confident, and entirely real. Believable.

The character of Abagail Bartlett played by Stockard Channing in the TV series The West Wing. She is brilliant, clever, thoughtful, well spoken, articulate, funny, down to earth, humane, empathetic, and insightful. She is equally comfortable in a ball gown or sweats and she's just as comfortable speaking with an ambassador as she is with her kids. Again, human.

In the book series written by Sue Grafton, the character of Kinsey Millhone. That character is down to earth. Street smart. Funny. Relatable.

I think what makes all these characters and all good characters (whether men or women) is when the character is human. As if you or me, but for X or Y circumstance, could be in the same situation. Where we can relate to their human-ness, their flaw, their foible, their one or two perfections.

Kairi from Kingdom Hearts, a female character from Kingdom Hearts whose personality is most certainly not centered around the entirety of the main male protagonist. Lmao.
I can never remember well written female characters, it's a curse, I can only remember the extraordinarily bad ones. Bojack Horseman I think had a lot of good female characters.

From my perspective, a well-written female character is one where all aspects that make her unique as a female are presented in a realistic manner without taking anything to an extreme. She is comfortable with herself as an individual. She has healthy inner strength she doesn't feel a need to use against others. She may help others broaden their perspective, but she doesn't shove anything down the throats of others.

My favorite book has one of these characters. It's actually a 4 book series, and she is primarily in the latter two books, especially the last one. Reading all 4 will give you a good foundation to understand the complexities of the story... with time going in both directions simultaneously. Her name is Aenea, and you can find the book by looking up the Hyperion Cantos by Dan Simmons. The first book is similar to the Canterbury Tales, where travelers share their stories about what brings them to this place, but the true story develops deeper as the books progress. The pace also gets faster as the story progresses.

Lucy in the Narnia books (not so much the movies because of the script, not Georgie Henley). In fact all the female characters in the Narnia books are well rounded from Jadis to Mrs Beaver. The children in particular though because we get to watch them grow into formidable characters across the seven books.

Asajj Ventress, she was strong but not as strong as the top tier male characters, which makes her far more realistic than Rey the Mary Sue, female as villainous underdog make sense.
