If you're looking for something character-driven, try the Vorkosigan saga. If you do, go with internal chronological order (which is almost, but not quite, the same as publishing order; any fan can help you sort it out). The penultimate book was kinda iffy, and the last one SERIOUSLY wanting, but other than that, they're great, and two misses out of a series that's been running since 1984 is pretty darned good.
