What is it about avatar that makes everyone think it’s the greatest movie of all time?

It is generally agreed-upon by most people that avatar is hands-down the greatest movie ever made. Why is that?

It's an objectively bad movie once you remove the top tier (for its time) CGI. It was also one of the only movies during the 3D fad that actually did it well. The story was a straight rip of Dances with Wolves / Pocahontas / The Last Samurai, the dialogue was mediocre at best, and nobody walked away from that movie with some kind of revelation or newfound outlook. It's also three unnecessary hours long. I worked at a movie theater at the time it came out, and the number of people who kept coming back solely for the visuals and munching hot popcorn was staggering. I watched it once and thought it was decent, but watched it a second time years later and realized how hollow it actually is. Ultimately, the only way you could call it the "best" movie is if going solely off of ticket sales, which were padded by the fact 3D movie tickets cost more.

Regarding the sequel, it's more of the same: three hours of eye candy, an idiotic story, contrived dialogue/decisions made by the characters, about a third of the movie is completely unnecessary, and the ending sets up the next sequel in such a way that this movie doesn't really even need to exist. The thing is though, the movie is almost entirely CGI, so it's effectively an extremely detailed cartoon. It apparently went through development hell with multiple reshoots, and it's far from Cameron's best work. Aside from surprisingly portraying the value of family in a positive light, it's worse or at least less impressive than the original in every way, but will no doubt benefit from the fact the only other big movie of the year was Maverick.

I have no idea. I tried to watch the first one when it came out and I shut it off as soon as I saw that he turned the characters into some blue, weird looking things.

What a waste of Zoe Saldana's beautiful face to be a fucked up blue thing.

By Avatar i assume you mean the tall blue people one.
The story is pretty decent and the acting of the actors was definitely phenomenal but what i think really made the movie that great was the fact that it's CGI and special effects so well taken.
The cinematography was brilliant and the scenes were breathtaking.
