I used to draw “lessons.”
Feelings I felt. Messages I tried conveying to myself, just without words.
One example: when I was younger- I drew a picture of myself with knight’s armor. On my left and right hand side, I drew angels like Michael and Gabriel, and Jesus himself.
It was to convey I would do more than Joan of Arc and I had to protect my family and help the world. It was who I was.
ofc I was just a teen then 😂 and someone who believed in God at that time.
It was pretty intense stuff!
Also drew dreams I had. Nice ones of me in heaven with crowns that weren’t ordinary… crowns that represented who we were to our core. 💪
Jeus had a real one. With crazy jewels. Mine were live birds nesting in my hair. They were divine. I don’t say what they meant. It was just such a throat-lump-swelling-eye-burning-heart-warming dream.
I tried always to give meaning to it. (My drawings). Make it somewhat clear so other viewers could see it- if I ever made artistry a “thing” for myself.
I only share this deep thing here because one: art is deep; the heart is deep. Two: art is expressive.
Three: This was a version of myself that never got seen and may never unfold itself in that constant direction. I don't know what she would’ve became, and I deserve to honor her. It’s an obligation. She was a version and ally of and to myself, in which I will never forget. Believe it or not- that’s the version of me that taught me courage. I’ll never be able to outdo that lesson of courage- in my latter years. My younger ‘me’ definitely has this.
Tribute: to the younger rose ✨🍾🥂
Well that was an unexpected answer.
I personally can't relate to most of that since I don't give meanings to my art and i've always been secular and tend to focus on visual aesthetics and drawing stuff I like. But I can relate to having birds on my head, and I frequently draw my dreams, or rather stuff from them.
Also, by "another version of yourself" do you mean you don't draw anymore?
I wish, I suck at drawing. 🤣
I used to suck at drawing (when I was little), now I don't, because I continued drawing despite sucking, long enough to no longer suck.
A lot of people like to say its natural talent or a gift or something, but I think it's just a genetic predisposition to not giving a shit about other people's opinions of you or your skills (that and getting annoyed that what is in your head isn't on the paper yet, and you NEED it to be on the paper like a crackhead needs his fix, so you keep drawing and drawing until one day, it is). Wheras most people will just focus on the immediate failure and be too disgusted to continue, artists focus on the failure and are too disgusted to not fix it.
Basically viewpoint is usually the only reason people do or don't practice drawing.
