'The Shawshank Redemption' (1994) is widely considered to be the best film of all time so you should definitely give that a watch.

If you want your mind snapped by a zero budget time travel film that doesn't spoon feed you the plot you should try 'Primer' (2004)

You might try 'Moon' (2009) for a demonstration that you don't need a large cast to have a good time; it's essentially 1 guy for the entire film.
