I used to like doing stuff like that. Still do sometimes. By the time I was 10-11 years old I had gone through most of my dad's drafting book. A dozen years later I ended up doing it for a living. Of course professionally I drew stuff that could actually be made. The Escher type of drawings were just for fun. The possibilities are endless.
That was all 2D. You can't do it with 3D unless you have a camera angle that creates the illusion. As soon as you move the camera (POV) it changes the illusion. I can imagine how much fun Escher would have with modern 3D tools.
I love Escher's drawings. They seem so real... until you study them closely and realize that cannot possibly exist.
