Although Marvin is a fictional character and played for laughs it's actually heartbreaking because he thinks and acts exactly like a depressed person does in RL.

Depression is a serious issue. Making a joke of it by comparing it to cartoons is insulting.

It IS a serious problem, but sometimes humor helps people cope, at least in my experience it certainly has.
