Mark Hammill was virtually unknown before Star Wars as was Natalie Portman. I also think Carrie Fisher and Harrison Ford weren't really known either. Since they became stars through being in Star Wars, did George Lucas have to pay more to keep them, despite the fact that his movies made them famous?
No. I think you pay more based on their star power, the level of the role they are playing and the negotiations with the actors manager. An actor might accept lower money for a role they really want.
I'm not sure Carrie Fisher and Mark Hamilton may have got a little bit more money for the star wars sequels because they were bigger stars whereas b4 thd were virtually unknown but Harrison ford was in American Graffiti b4 star wars and before empire he was in force 10. After Empire strikes back he was india Jones and blade runner.
I think Natalie Portman at 17 was contracted for the 3 star wars movies not sure what she got. She was really only a child star in Leon and Heat before that. It opened a lot of doors for her and she started to get staring roles in movies, she claimed star wars almost cost her her career but I think if anything it gave her a leg up and she did make some bad choices in regards to roles.
Another example was when it was claimed that for American hustle Jennifer lawerence and Amy Adams had been paid far less than Christian bale and Bradley Cooper because they were women when the truth was that bale and Cooper got paid more because they were bigger stars, Amy Adams had stared in very few movies as a lead charcter and Jennifer lawerence even though she was in hunger games and silver linings playbook wasn't a main character central to the story. This was Amy Adams big break out role, that lead to a lot of major roles for her so she probably would have done it for free and though the movie even if it wasn't a major role helped establish Lawerence as an serious actress. Jeremy Reiner was in it too, I'm sure he got less than Bale or Cooper.

I’d assume its like a promoter in boxing. He gets paid for helping them gain attention but nowhere near as much as they get paid
George Lucas knew Harrison Ford all the way back to American Graffiti and gave him some minor success. So I don't want to say it earned him the role. But considering Kurt Russell, Christopher Walken, and Nick Nolte all read for the part. I think being a known quantity at that point probably did help him. He got paid only 10k for the role. But earned 500k each time for reprising it for the sequels. Compare that to Mark Hamill who earned 650k for a new hope.
