As an early reader, I loved Winnie the Pooh and The House at Pooh Corner. I barely remember the time before learning to read. I do remember asking my mother how she knows what the words were in the books she read to me. She told me the letters stood for sounds. I was like "oh". Then I started reading for myself.
Somehow my parents had an old torn "Dick and Jane" primer. I have no idea why. That was the first thing I read. I was quite young. An older cousin said that I was reading the newspaper when i was 4. All I distinctly remember is reading "Now We Are Six" when I was about 5. Now that I think about it, I started at a private kindergarten before my 5th birthday and I was reading then. I was bored out of my mind, and begged my mother not to send me back after the winter break.
I can't remember the title but it was about a worm on a fishing hook. This little fish came, swam round and around and around then swam away. Then on next page a slightly bigger fish came, swam round and around and around then swam away. Then on next page a slightly bigger fish, well you get the idea.
Spoiler Alert. On the last page the worm gets eaten by a big fish and your mother gets sick of saying swam around and around.
About Dennis the Menace, how he painted a sponge into a cake for Mr Wilson.
