What books do you think would make good films adaptations, fiction or nonfiction?

You can include books that have been done as films, but you wish was more faithful to the book.

Stephen King wrote a collection of stories called "Different Seasons". "Apt Pupil" ("summer of corruption") was adapted into the movie of the same name, and is about a precocious young boy in the early seventies who realizes that his new elderly neighbor is actually a former Nazi death camp commander, and agrees to not go to the authorities if he'll tell him about it, giving him all the stories "including the gooshy bits"; he's learned about the Holocaust and is interested in getting a firsthand account. Dussander (the Nazi) wants at first to let the past go and just move on with his life, but Todd (the boy) has a morbid curiosity that gradually warps into a fascination, and being mentally brought back to those years calls up the old urges in him. Todd, too, becomes twisted and corrupted by power, and it shows just how easily those horrors could be revisited. The movie does a decent job, but it loses a little of the personal horror of seeing your humanity slide away (even though, unique among the stories, it's written in third person). It also features Ian McKellen as a Nazi, and how often do you get to say THAT?

The other two are more famous: The Body (fall from innocence) was made into Stand By Me, one of those movies that everyone should watch, and Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption (hope springs eternal) was made into... do I really have to say it? If by some chance you haven't seen The Shawshank Redemption, then open up another tab, check if your library has it, put a hold on it, and watch it- you'll thank me later.

The fourth story, The Breathing Method, has never been adapted- but I'd like to see someone try to. Not Hollywood; they lack the creativity. But some up-and-coming indie flimmaker? Yes. That, I think, would do nicely.
