What is the best film adaptation of a novel in your opinion?

Not sure if the question is asking what is the adaptation most faithful to the original material or if it is asking if it was, on its' own, the best to watch. However, either way, put me down for "Remains of the Day," based on the Kazuo Ishiguro - who is British, by the way, the Japanese name notwithstanding - novel of the same name.

The movie starred Anthony Hopkins and he nailed the part of the British butler, Stevens, around whom the book and the movie revolve. Emma Thompson also does a superb job as Miss Kenton.

Set in flashback in 1920s and 1930s Britain, it is a novel about missed opportunities, regrets, and valuing what is before us. As a cheat, here is the Wikipedia summary of the book, followed by the Rotten Tomatoes page on the movie:

There are very few times I've both read the book and seen the movie. I've seen and read The Lord of the Rings and Hobbit, and think the movies did an absolutely horrible job. They are OK if you want action, cinematography, and CGI. Nothing wrong with that. But they only resemble the books in the loosest way. They give no feel at all for why the books launched the popularity of an entire genre of books.

I've probably seen a lot of movies that started as books, but I can't think of many off the top of my head. I thought A River Runs Through It was very good. I want to read the book someday.

These are all fine answers, and I'd say there are plenty of other good ones like The Princess Bride and Misery. But the absolute BEST film adaptation was Apocalypse Now, which was a film adaptation of Heart of Darkness... It captured the dark depths of the novel in a way that is rather scary.

Yes, that’s very true - from some stories they took only plot points or mere snippets, but for me it’s about the essence of that book series (the British spy, both gentleman and killer), that Sean Connery so perfectly embodies.

Well the movie Pride & Prejudice got me to read the book. Events happen faster, but nothing that needs to be in there was removed for the movie. A character was cut, but I don't recall her doing anything important in the book anyway.

Despite the pretty massive deviations from the books (Elves at Helm's Deep and the deaths of Saruman and Grima just for starters) I will say Lord of the Rings.
