Good 70s/80s film recommendations?

I like watching films from the 1970s and 80s (some 90s too) I've just watched Saturday Night Fever. I've recently finished watching all the 'Brat Pack' flicks I could find as well. Now I wanna know of some more to watch!

I've seen most of the spaghetti westerns and Stephen King adaptions. Some of my favorite films are Scum, The Wicker Man, Straw Dogs, Withnail & I, etc.

Looking for some new suggestions? Some cult-classics would be cool. I'm happy to watch any genre. :)

MANY of the movies from the 1970s are good. Unfortunately, what happened was Jaws invented the true blockbuster. Don't get me wrong - it's a great film - but then, 2 years later, Star Wars came out and The Age of the Blockbuster was born to the point that, now, pretty much every movie is a franchise movie.

This caused the death of most intelligent films... films in which stuff doesn't blow-up.

Since I was just mentioning Jennifer O'Neill in an earlier question, I recommend her breakthrough role in "Summer of '42", a 1971 film in which a 15-year-old boy named Hermie and his friends spend the summer on an island. On this island is also a beautiful young bride and her husband, a soldier, who is later called off to fight in WW2. This film is a "coming of age" film about the boy and this woman. It has a very bittersweet ending.

'Saturday Night Fever' inspired me even more to learn different dances.

‘The Deer Hunter’, 'Rocky', ‘Enter the Dragon’, ‘Dog Day Afternoon’, ‘All That Jazz’, 'Alien', 'Jaws', 'Taxi Driver' and ‘The Godfather' (1 & 2) definitely rank high among '70s movies I'd watch again.

Next: All the Indiana Jones movies and all the next Star Wars movies that followed in the '80s besides 'Chariots of Fire', 'Tootsie', 'The Untouchables', 'Field of Dreams', 'Dead Poets Society', 'Stand by Me', 'Driving Miss Daisy', 'Back to the Future', 'The Killing Fields', 'E. T.', 'Rain Man', 'Top Gun' and many more memorable movies from the '80s.

'(Lieutenant) Ripley' & '(Princess) Leia' were probably the most powerful female characters of the '70s & '80s.

one who flew over the coco's nest with jack nicholson comes to mind... as really good movie a lot of what were mentioned are mediocre at best... if you like Saturday night fever you'll like dirty dancing with patrick swayzee... not quite the same but has dancing in it.

So many good ones. Star Wars, Jaws, Back to the Future, True Grit, Every which Way But Loose, Raiders of the Lost Ark, The Godfather, The Exorcist, The amityville Horror, Rocky, Rambo, Ghostbusters, Aliens, The Blues Brothers, The Terminator, The Right Stuff, Die Hard,
All these movies really illustrates the fact that Hollywood does not know how to make movies anymore.

I've seen most of those. Full Metal Jacket was an incredible film, is Platoon a similar vibe?
I'll also add French Connection to the list for sure, that looks like it'll be a good watch.

Yeah my favorite actor of all time Gene Hackman won his first oscar in French Connection. Definitely check out the Conversation too. Also stars Hackman and directed by Coppola.

So full metal Jacket we can all agree the first half is the best part while the latter while ok just isn’t as good for the up close personal combat perspective in the Vietnam war. So thats where Platoon comes in, its very personal and shows the real uglyness of war. Plus it has a stellar cast. Oliver stone himself was a Vietnam vet so a lot of ot is hos own personal experiences. Definitely check it out.

Thanks for the recommendations! You're right about Full Metal Jacket, that scene with Private Pyle was creepy as hell. I'll watch Platoon tonight, it's got great reviews.

Also, had to leave this here... one of the best Gene Hackman scenes... well, one of the best scenes full stop!!!

Just remembered a couple Scorsese movies from both decades: Taxi Driver and Raging Bull.

Also if you want cult classics and don't mind weirdness check out any of David Lynch's movies: Eraserhead, Elephant man, Blue Velvet... maybe even Dune from 1984
