It depends on whether someone just plays for fun or if they're genuinely passionate about video games.
I like playing video games, but I play for fun and out of boredom. And I do have a few favorites that I get excited about, but I'm not passionate about video games.
And that's not to say that being passionate about video games automatically makes you a "childish" person, but if you're putting video games over other priorities/responsibilities in your life, then I think THAT is childish and maybe even a little irresponsible.

I don't see it as childish. Especially that playing some games is quite demanding in terms of time and skills.

I have my share of playing in semi-hardcore guild in WoW. Long hours of progressing content to have better position on the realm/battlegroup/region. Long hours with guildmates spent on enhancing technics and tactics. Great training of teamwork, aligning to the leader, and finding my own niche. And Long hours I mean more than 40/week.

I know for some it could be seen as childish. For me it's not. Life is too short to focus on cleaning, making laundry or shopping only. I have my fun :D

It isn't childish to play video games or have them as a hobby. The issue stems from if there is discipline in mitigation of playing them. Do you have a job? Do you have other hobbies? Do you have bills to pay? Social life? Wife and kids?

There is nothing wrong with playing from time to time or an hour or so, but if that is all you are doing day in and day out, then it becomes an issue. There is more to life than being stuck behind a screen. It is a fun escape in moderation, not life.

Not really because in the early days when I started playing, they were entirely an adult thing. Adults were the ones who designed them. They were the ones who played them. They were the ones who popularized them. They were the ones who financed them, giving financial incentive to keep making more games.

Somewhere along the line, kiddies started playing them. Their parents stuck the kids in front on the game and let them veg out for hours at a time.

I know a lot of kids play games, but because I started so early when it was only adults, I have never thought of games being a kid's thing. Although I think of certain type of games, like shooters, being kid's games.

By the way, my father is the one who got me started. He would be 103 if he was still alive. I was a fair amount younger than most of those guys doing that stuff in the early days.

Nothing wrong with it. Restricting oneself to “adult” activities is dullsville. What do most “normal” adults have to get excited about anyway? Liquor-fuelled small talk and bragging about how often they take a roll in the hay? Yawn, snore. I just do what I want, blast what anyone may think. I never fit in with any particular age group anyway.

People with that negative azz mindset are probably more childish. They really would be that kind of person who pretends to use tootsie rolls as a cigarette, and leave part of the wrapper on to give it that extra kick. There is just the childish person and that is it in this situation, being a gamer is not a factor. Just like how nostalgia is not a factor when deciding whether a movie is bad or not.

Some games nowadays are better than most movies and TV shows I've seen. The writing is phenomenal. Deeply layered and flawed characters, compelling plots. Eg. God of war 2018 and red dead redemption 2. There are more but these are 2 that I've played. No more childish than rewatching the godfather or breaking bad or something similar.

Most of the people who grew up enjoying video games are well into middle age. They are just another medium of entertainment like literature, music, TV, or film. I'd say the video game industry has been doing better than these other industries lately in terms of quality. Let's hope Nintendo and other video game companies continue to resist the woke mind virus.

Plenty are aimed at adults and feature gatuitous violence and heavy narritives. Not exactly kid friendly.

And plenty are aimed at kids and feature animals and puzzles.

Video games are a great past time, so generally, I view them as entertainment. But on the same token they are used by a lot of people as a form of escapism, for those individuals, I'd call video games a childish hobby
