I got 28 but it's early in the morning for me. I tried to simplify it using MS Paint and decompose the problems but I think I should have used a notepad instead. It was tedious drawing all the lines and I got lazy.

Actually never mind, I double-checked it and I think I decomposed it correctly. I wasn't 100% if I missed an overlapping area. 28 seems right to me.

This is going to be really embarrassing if I got it wrong. 😅 I used to be a former Mensa member and excelled at these types of problems but I think I killed my brain cells with too much alcohol.

Help me. I counted 27, and the discrepancy is in the bottom triangle in the middle.
You have 3 marked there, but I only see 2.
Am I missing something?

@RainbowMarinade The bottom middle one with the way I divided it? That one has 2 sub-triangles but one parent triangle. You might not have counted the bigger one that encompasses the two.

Any triangle split in half that way to form 2 sub-triangles is going to make up three triangles: the two sub-triangles and itself. Same with the "eyes" of the cat.

A triangle split into three sub-triangles is going to form 3 sub-triangles, two parent triangles, and one root triangle. So you end up with 6 in those cases as with the ones making up the "feet" of the cat.

@RainbowMarinade So you end up with 3+3 triangles for the eyes, 6+6 for the feet, 1 for the head, 1 for the mouth, 1 big one for the body (it overlaps to form the mouth), and then 7 for the tail. So 3+3+6+6+1+1+1+7=28. The tail was actually the tricky part for me given the degree of overlap of the mid-section of the tail.

When I said the bottom middle, I was referring to the breakdown you provided. The base of the tail if you will.
You have it marked as three. The outer triangle, and the one at the end.
Where is the third?

@RainbowMarinade Oh, you are absolutely right! Those two only form two as there's only one inner triangle. I derped there and failed to realize the inner shapes don't always form a triangle. So perhaps the correct answer is 26? I think I need to revisit the tail. It's the one that got me all confused.

There are, in fact, 7 triangles in the tail. 🙄

@RainbowMarinade My rationale was incorrect though! You were right pointing out my error. I had to decompose the tail again and this time did it very carefully.


I got 7 again but the way I decomposed and counted it originally was incorrect.

@RainbowMarinade The kind of visual algorithm I used is that, when removing an overlapping triangle, A, from another, B, erase any interior contour lines from B forming A.

I was trying to do that in the original but I was running out of space on the canvas in MS Paint and started rotating and skewing the tail triangles to fit and messed up there.

In the triangles on the base of the large triangle there are a lot of triangles. There is the outside triangle and three inside it for four so far. But there are two fatter triangles from the outside line to the second inside so six or twelve for the two.

Similarly there 8 in the tail. A complicated cat.
