Yes, I watched the original, which was actually Bob Newhart's second TV show. It was funny. I remember the memorable last episode, where he wakes up in bed next to Suzanne Pleschette, his wife in the original show, and it appears that the entire series has been a dream.

Bob Newhart had a genius comic persona.

We had a copy of his 33rpm album, "The Button-Down Mind of Bob Newhart" when I was a kid. It was hilarious.
