I'd say R. E. M - and U2's 80s stuff was awesome. Followed by The Cure. Of the above, I'd put the Smiths last.

The 80s was such a magical time for alternative music! Among my favorites has to be The Cure. Their moody lyrics combined with Robert Smith's distinctive voice and gothic style created such a unique atmosphere. I still get chills listening to "Just Like Heaven" and "A Forest". Their sound and aesthetic were so ahead of their time, and they continue to influence many bands today. What about you?

Except for one or two tracks @ from Duran Duran and U2, I wouldn't give you a nickle for any of them except The Cars!!

The Cars. I find the rest barely tolerable, although I do like the solo work of Andy Taylor, guitar player with Duran Duran, which is far more "rock" than the band itself.
