Do you ever think about weird stuff when you hear a song? ?

This is John Lennon and the Plastic Ono Band. Every time I hear this all i can think is that they are all using fake plastic instruments.  This question was inspired by @sage2021

Oh yes, that’s part of the human experience. Music-evoked autobiographical memories (MEAMs) are powerful memories which are triggered by a specific sound. For example, soldiers are often triggered (in the figurative sense) by the sound of gun-fire, and can experience a significant PTSD episode because of it. Evoked autobiographical memories are most often triggered by olfaction. When a person smells something very specific it can evoke extremely powerful memories. This occurs because when you were going through whatever the memory is of, the brain used that specific scent as a “file marker” for that memory. It can be a little alarming the first time it happens, but it’s quite normal. For me the smell of espresso type coffees combined with leather evokes a very powerful memory of me walking down a street in Ibiza, Spain. When I was visiting “Little Havana” in Miami, the smell of cuban coffee is everywhere. When I was buying a new purse at a beautiful boutique on Calle Ocho, when I suddenly smelled coffee. That, combined with the smell of leather that surrounded me in the boutique, immediately took me back to when I was a little girl walking along a street in Ibiza with my mom. I could see the café I could see the cars and scooters, I could see a palm tree, and a leather store. It was so vivid and powerful, it frankly amazed me!

MEAMs do the same thing, and work in the exact same way. You experience something which may or not be a profound experience, but in that moment you can hear music. you may not even be conscious of the fact that you can hear a song, but it still gets filed away in an engram, and the sound of that one song goes is in there too, to act as a “file marker” for your memory. After a while, you may not even consciously recall that memory, but whenever you hear that song you immediately think of that past experience! This happens to people all the time, it’s usually not a profound or even noteworthy experience, and usually someone will describe it in a way similar to: “Oh I love this song! You know whenever I hear this I always think of that time when my fiancé and I were first dating and he was trying to impress me. He kept doing all these things to make me feel impressed, but everything he did failed spectacularly! It became a comedy of errors!” or “whenever I hear this song, it reminds me of the day my ex and I broke up, and this was playing on the radio while I was breaking up with him in the car!”
‘m really not sure WHY it happens, only that it does happen, and it’s actually a shared human experience, not just an individual one.

That gathering looked so weird. Ick. It was a trip seeing Tommy Smothers and Timothy Leary there but some of those other people looked like wankers.

Even back then, even though I was into peace and love and the hippie thing, I thought John Lennon had lost it. Too much acid maybe.

Songs often conjure visual images in my mind. Machine Gun by Jimi Hendrix. Also some his other songs like Axis: Bold as Love and 1983, A Merman I Merman I Should Turn to Be.
White Room and Tales of Brave Ulysses by Cream.
Great White Buffalo by Ted Nugent.

The first time I heard Children of the Grave by Black Sabbath, the galloping rhythm conjured an image of barbarians on horses in the distance, charging up over a rise with spears, axes and horned helmets. This was before the Conan the Barbarian or any movies about barbarians. I found that rhythm and image thrilling.

Some great classical music can also conjure imagery.

When I hear a song, I usually either think about where I was or the time in my life when the song was first released, or I associate the song with a particular girl from my past.

Oh, that's such an interesting thought! 🎸 Music often sparks all kinds of wild and wonderful imaginations! I remember once listening to a song by Björk and envisioning a whimsical world where instruments were alive and danced around as she composed the music, kind of like in an animated movie. Sometimes I hear a song and imagine being in a completely different landscape, like a magical forest or an alien planet 🌌. It's fascinating how music can transport us to different mental realms.
